Central Ostrobothnia and the Kaustinen sub-region are in a period of transition. New opportunities are opening up for the region in renewable energy production, electricity grid reinforcement and energy storage.

These changes are laying the foundations for new industrial ecosystems, where energy, raw materials, logistics and processing are more efficiently interlinked. Bio-terminals are a key part of this.

A bioterminal is not just a place to store wood or biomass. It can serve as a platform for new businesses that receive, process and transform biomass for different needs. By locating terminals close to the growing electricity grid, renewable energy production and future energy storages, the conditions for scalable and competitive operations are created. Overall, the by-product of one operation can be a critical raw material for another. This is the case, for example, with the use of waste heat for biomass drying or preheating.

At this stage, these opportunities are not seen as ready-made models, but as open development paths to be built together with companies. The aim is to identify what kind of industrial ecosystems are realistic in the region, where bioteminals have a role to play and what kind of investments, cooperation models and infrastructure solutions are required.

For companies, this is an opportunity to be involved early on by influencing the location, operational solutions and future investments in the region. The work will progress in stages - from discussions and mapping to concrete development projects and investment preparation - in cooperation with municipalities, businesses and developers.

Information sessions on the subject of "Bio-terminals and new industrial areas" will be held in all the municipalities in the sub-region in early February. The events are organised by the Kaustinen sub-regional Biogas Clinic project. The project is funded by the Central Ostrobothnian Regional Council from the JTF fund and the municipalities of the Kaustinen region.
